Burnet County sits inside the working chain of Highland Lakes

The Colorado River does not pass through Burnet County as one open channel. Dams break it into lakes Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls, Travis, and Austin. LCRA operates all six dams, though Mansfield Dam was built with the federal Bureau of Reclamation.

Buchanan and Travis are the large storage lakes. Together they supply water for more than one million people. The smaller lakes between them pass water downstream, which makes the chain feel like one long piece of county geography even though each lake works differently.

That working system matters on shore too. A lot near the water may fall under lake, septic, floodplain, or watershed rules. The lake name alone does not tell you which office or map controls the project.
