A Local District Manages Groundwater in Irion County
Most of Irion County sits over the Edwards-Trinity (Plateau) Aquifer. This is the main source of groundwater for rural properties. The county has had its own groundwater conservation district since 1985.
The Irion County Water Conservation District has the authority to require well permits and set rules on how much water can be pumped. Their most recent management plan was approved in 2023. If you are buying rural land or planning to drill, contact the district early. Their website is irionwcd.org. The Texas Water Development Board keeps records on the district at twdb.texas.gov.
