Friedrich Wilderness Park Gives Northwest San Antonio a Real Canyon Hike
Friedrich Wilderness Park is one of the places where Bexar County feels less like a big metro area and more like the edge of the Hill Country. The City of San Antonio says the park has about 10 miles of hiking trails at different difficulty levels, plus steep hills and deep canyons.
It is managed as a natural area, so the rules are tighter than at a picnic park. Pets, bicycles, scooters, skateboards, smoking, and fires are not allowed. That protects the habitat, including nesting sites for the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and the Black-capped Vireo, which makes the park a known spot for birders.
Check the city park page before you go. Trails can close after wet weather, and the city asks visitors to bring water for longer hikes in warm weather.
