Drainage Districts Manage the County's Flood Channels

Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 is one of the county's key flood-management agencies. It was created under the Texas Constitution to operate and maintain major drainage channels across the flat Rio Grande delta.

These districts can assess fees on property owners in their service area. If you buy property here, check whether it lies inside a drainage district. That district may add a fee to your tax bill and may have rules about what you can build near its channels.
