Senior, disability, and veteran tax breaks use different rules
An owner who is 65 or older or meets the state's disability test can get an extra $60,000 school exemption. The owner also gets a cap on school taxes. It is not a cap on the home's value. New work on the home can raise the tax cap.
Veteran benefits follow other rules. The basic benefit gives a set dollar amount based on the VA rating. A full homestead exemption has a higher test. The veteran must get VA pay at the 100-percent rate and have either a 100-percent rating or individual unemployability. Donated homes and some spouses use other rules.
File with Gregg CAD. The due date can change by exemption, including for a midyear or late claim. Use the current state form for the benefit that fits. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
