Cherokee Lake's record bass comes with private-water rules

One fish put Cherokee Lake in the TPWD record book: a 9.75-pound, 25-inch largemouth bass caught on April 15, 1987. The lake lies in southeast Gregg and northeast Rusk counties. The Texas Water Development Board identifies Cherokee Water Company as its owner and operator.

This is not a normal public-ramp lake. Cherokee Water Company's current rules limit use to privilege-card holders and guests who meet its rules. Boats must pass the company's inspection process and use company ramps. The company also sets lake rules, while state fishing-license requirements still apply.

If a member invites you, ask that person to check the current company rulebook before you bring a rod or boat. The administrative office address is not a public lake entrance.
