Disabled-Veteran Tax Breaks Go Through Orange CAD

If the VA has rated you disabled, that rating can carve money off your Orange County property tax, and the size of the break tracks the percentage. Where you file is what costs people a year. The exemption is set by the Orange County Appraisal District at 9157 IH-10 East in Orange (mail goes to P.O. Box 457), not the tax assessor-collector who actually collects the bill. Send the request to the wrong office and it sits there while your eligibility year slips by.

Orange CAD only needs a copy of your VA declaration letter the first year you qualify, or in any year your disability percentage changes. The VA mails that letter annually, but you don't have to refile it every year here. The disabled-veteran exemption is also a separate form from the general residence homestead, so a veteran living in their own home may have two things on file at once.

Their staff will sort out which form fits your situation. The district answers at (409) 745-4777, with a second line at (409) 745-4112 if the first is busy, or email [email protected]. A quick call is the best way to make sure you've claimed everything you're owed.
