Parking Placards
Where to Get a Disabled Parking Placard in Randall County
A disabled parking placard is a state credential, but you don't mail it to Austin; you file it locally. Fill out TxDMV Form VTR-214, get the medical section signed off, and bring it to the Randall County tax assessor-collector at the Canyon office on 16th Street or the Amarillo annex on South Western. The first placard is free, so pay nothing for the basic one and you walk out with it.
The rule people forget is that the placard belongs to the person, not the parking spot. It's valid only when the person with the disability is actually in the vehicle. Riding along counts, but lending it to a family member to grab a closer space at the United in Canyon does not. Get caught using it without them aboard and the fine runs up to $1,250 and as much as 50 hours of community service.
Plates work the same way and tie to one specific vehicle, so if you switch cars often, the hanging placard is usually the more flexible choice.
