Cedar Ridge Preserve Brings Escarpment Trails to Southwest Dallas

Most people picture Dallas as flat, but Cedar Ridge Preserve sits up on the Mountain Creek escarpment in the southwest corner of the county, at 7171 Mountain Creek Parkway. Dallas Park and Recreation describes it as a natural habitat of about 600 acres with roughly nine miles of trails, native trees and grasses, wildflowers, butterfly gardens, and the wild mammals, birds, and reptiles that live there. The city calls it a 'slice of the hill country,' and the climb and shade make that feel right.

The land is City and County-owned, and the Dallas Audubon Society has run daily operations under a charter agreement since 2003, which is part of why the trails and habitat stay well tended.

It's a good showing of how Dallas County has ridges, forest, and elevation, not just freeways. Check Dallas Parks and the preserve manager for trail conditions, hours, and closures before heading out.
