Brashear Lake Park Has a College Thread in Its Story

Brashear Lake Park took shape at Holly Street and Ash Avenue in the 1980s. South Plains College gave land and money, and Texas Parks and Wildlife helped build the park. The eight-acre site became Levelland's second park meant to serve the whole town. It was a shared project among the college, city, and state wildlife agency. It gave the college edge of town an outdoor place of its own.

A three-quarter-mile walking trail makes a clear loop. Along it are three picnic areas with grills and tables, a playground, an all-purpose field, and the fishing lake. Fishing is allowed under Texas rules, but swimming is not. The water can draw people to the trail and picnic grounds without being a swimming hole.

SPC's gift still shapes the park. The college turned part of its land and money toward the town around it. The site became a public city park, not a campus space set apart from town. Levelland gained a place to walk, fish, play, and eat outdoors, all linked to the campus that helped put it there.
