Wimberley

Blue Hole is the cypress-shaded heart of Wimberley

Blue Hole Regional Park sits on Cypress Creek, where a run of towering bald cypress shades a clear, deep swimming hole that's been the town's summer gathering spot for over a century. The crystal-clear creek gives the water its name. It's the kind of place that explains Wimberley — a small Hill Country town whose whole public life seems to orbit creek water and cypress shade.

The swim area is the one part you have to plan for. From May 1 through Labor Day, plus weekends into September, swimming runs by reservation in timed sessions (roughly morning and afternoon blocks), and the slots fill on hot weekends, so book ahead rather than driving up and hoping. The rest of the park is the easy part: the hiking trails, bike paths, picnic spots, sports fields, and playground are free and open without any reservation at all.

So even when the swim sessions are full, it's a worthwhile stop. Walk the creek-side trails, let the kids loose on the playground, and you've still spent a good Wimberley afternoon in the shade.
