Business Filing
Where to file a DBA in Denton County
If a Denton County business operates under a name that is not its owner's legal name, that is an assumed name, or DBA. For a sole proprietor or a general partnership, the filing goes through the Denton County Clerk, and you can do it at any of the six County Clerk locations.
There is an important wrinkle: since September 1, 2019, LLCs, corporations, limited partnerships, and similar registered entities file their assumed names with the Texas Secretary of State instead of the county. So the right office depends on how your business is set up.
A DBA is not the same as forming an LLC or getting a sales tax permit. Before you open a bank account or advertise a trade name, confirm whether your filing belongs with Denton County, the Secretary of State, or both.
