Master-planned community

The Woodlands Was Planned Around Forest, Not Just Streets

The Woodlands can look polished and new from the road, but its local identity starts with a clear planning idea. George Mitchell founded The Woodlands in 1974 around a simple aim: blend growth with nature.

That was not just a slogan added later. The plan kept trees in the picture through forest preserves, greenbelts along streams, building setback lines, and development rules tied to those land goals.

That helps explain the place on the ground. Roads curve. Trees stay close to shops and offices. Paths run behind neighborhoods. Even busy parts often try to feel quieter than their size.

You do not have to love every master-planned detail to see the point. The forest is not trim here. It is part of the original civic design.
