White River Reservoir Works for Towns and Anglers

White River Reservoir began with a practical water problem. State water planners recommended a lake in 1955 to serve Ralls, Spur, Post, and Crosbyton. A water-right permit followed in 1958. Work on the earthfill dam started in 1962; the finished wall measured 3,300 feet long and 84 feet high. Deliberate impoundment began in October 1963. The White River Municipal Water District still owns and operates the reservoir for water supply and recreation.

The lake is not a fixed blue shape. Water levels commonly swing four to ten feet a year, and the water is normally turbid. A 2022 fisheries survey described a natural shoreline with rocks and standing timber. In a dry stretch, the waterline can move far enough to change both the look of the shore and the way people reach it.

Largemouth and white bass, channel and flathead catfish, white crappie, walleye, and sunfish share the lake. That mix gives the reservoir a second life beyond the pipes and dam. It is municipal infrastructure, fishing water, and a shifting piece of Crosby County geography all at once.
