Silver Falls Sits Where the High Plains Break

The plains do not stay flat forever. East of Crosbyton, US 82 reaches the White River break, and the eastbound safety rest area gives travelers a public way into Silver Falls. The stop has 24-hour restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables, accessible facilities, and a storm shelter. Those practical comforts sit beside the rough ground that gives the stop its character.

Silver Falls was once a waterfall where the highway crossed the White River. Heavy irrigation pumping dried many of the springs that fed it. What remains is a cut of steep and moderate slopes, shallow stony clay, sandy loam, oak, mesquite, and grass. The old falls survives now more as a landform and a name than as dependable flow.

Ranald S. Mackenzie camped near the falls in 1872 and 1874 during his campaigns. That older history sits beside a very modern road stop. Pulling in for a break puts you where the broad High Plains give way to rougher White River ground. The rest area handles the practical pause; Silver Falls shows why the road suddenly feels different.
