Vehicle titles
Buy a used car in Henderson County? Transfer the title within 30 days
Buy a truck off a neighbor or a Craigslist seller and the deal isn't really done until the title is in your name. In Texas that happens at the county tax assessor-collector's office, and for Henderson County that's the window at 125 N. Prairieville Street, Suite 103, in Athens. The same counter handles registration renewals, plate work, address changes, and temporary registration.
Texas gives you 30 calendar days from the date of sale to transfer the title and register the vehicle; drag past that and the late penalty starts climbing. Bring the signed-over title, your proof of insurance and ID, and be ready to pay the title fee plus motor-vehicle sales tax figured on the sale price. Doing it promptly also closes your liability with the seller, since until the title moves, the truck is still tied to their name.
Just don't expect to handle your driver license at the same counter. Plates, titles, and registration live with the county tax office; your license and state ID are a Texas DPS matter at a separate location. Two errands, two buildings.
