Transfer a vehicle title through the Brazos County Tax Office

Buy or sell a car privately in Brazos County and the paperwork runs through the Brazos County Tax Office. The office provides vehicle registration and title transaction services as an agent for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, so you don't deal with the state directly — you deal with the local counter.

TxDMV requires the vehicle to be titled in the buyer's name within 30 days of the sale. Bring the signed-over title (with the date of sale and odometer reading filled in), a completed Form 130-U with the sales price shown, proof of insurance, and any lien release or power of attorney that applies. Texas sales tax of 6.25% is due at transfer, figured on the price or the standard presumptive value, whichever is higher.

One practical tip from TxDMV: have the seller come with you so staff can confirm the title checks out before you hand over money. The county tax office is at 4151 County Park Court in Bryan. Confirm the current checklist with the office or TxDMV before you go.
