Shelby County vehicle work starts at the Center tax office

As checked July 31, 2026, TxDMV listed the Shelby County Tax Office at 200 San Augustine Street in Center. Call 936-598-8172 for vehicle questions. The county uses a different number for property tax. Its posted hours were 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except holidays. Call before a holiday visit.

The Shelby office handles many common jobs. It can help with renewals, title transfers, address changes, some no-fee plates, disabled parking placards, copies of registration receipts, and temporary registration.

Some jobs go to a TxDMV regional service center. Examples include replacement titles, apportioned registration, bonded-title rejection letters, title-history requests, and some title-error work. Check the service list before taking every title problem to the county counter.

For an in-person renewal, bring the renewal notice and current liability insurance. If the notice is missing, bring the plate number, VIN, or old registration receipt. TxDMV also calls for a government photo ID in that case. Other jobs need different papers, so call the vehicle line before driving to Center with an unusual title or placard question.
