Lavaca registration skips inspection for noncommercial vehicles

Texas ended the usual safety check on January 1, 2025. In Lavaca County, that change covers a noncommercial vehicle. It does not need a safety check before registration. Lavaca is also outside the state emissions program, so it does not need an emissions test. The registration county controls that emissions rule. A move can change that answer.

Commercial vehicles are different. They still need a commercial safety inspection in every county. Texas also kept the inspection-replacement fee on noncommercial registrations. That fee did not go away.

No notice? A plate number, VIN, or prior registration receipt can identify the vehicle. Online renewal opens 90 days before expiration. It may remain available for 12 months afterward if no expired-registration citation was issued. That window does not make late driving legal. It describes when the online system may still accept the renewal.
