The call to Lavaca dispatch is notice, not permission to burn

Before a controlled burn, Lavaca County asks you to call dispatch at 361-798-2121. Give the burn location and a contact number. Dispatch can tell you about a county burn ban or Red Flag Warning. The notice can also keep a smoke report from sending a volunteer fire crew out needlessly.

The call tells dispatch about the fire. It does not permit it. It cannot create a legal exception, override a county order, or satisfy a city rule. A Red Flag Warning is not an enforceable burn ban. It still signals fire weather and gives you a strong reason to wait.

Texas generally bars outdoor burning unless the purpose and material fit a TCEQ exception. An allowed burn can still have rules for time, wind, smoke, distance, attendance, and fire control. Plastics, treated lumber, rubber, chemicals, and business waste do not become legal fuel when mixed into a brush or refuse pile.

A forest-management prescribed burn has another step: notify the Texas A&M Forest Service. A city can be stricter than the county. Start with the TCEQ exception. Then confirm the local order, tell dispatch, and read the weather. If any one of those checks fails, the pile stays cold.
