Lampasas County Tags Do Not Need an Emissions Test
A noncommercial car or truck registered in Lampasas County needs no safety or emissions test. Texas ended the safety check for these vehicles on January 1, 2025. Lampasas is outside the emissions program. Vehicles covered by DPS commercial rules still need an inspection.
TxDMV runs vehicle registration statewide. The local counter is the Lampasas County tax office at 409 S. Pecan Street, Suite 101. Some renewals can be done online through TxT. Titles and in-person tag work belong at the county office. Driver licenses belong with DPS.
For an in-person renewal, bring the renewal notice, proof of current liability insurance, valid identification, and the fees due. If the notice is missing, the office can use the plate number, VIN, or last year's registration receipt. Those items replace the notice, not the rest of the checklist.
A sale, gift, inherited vehicle, or other change of ownership uses different title forms. The county page also lists current counter hours and late-day cutoffs for title or card work. Read that live schedule before making the drive instead of trusting an old closing time.
