Vehicle Registration Practical

Taylor County passenger vehicles need no annual safety or emissions inspection

Texas ended the yearly safety check for personal vehicles on January 1, 2025. Taylor County is also outside the emissions program. A personal car or light truck does not need an annual safety or tailpipe test before renewal.

The state adds a $7.50 replacement fee to registration instead. Commercial vehicles still need a safety check. That difference matters at renewal. Read the current DPS rule for the vehicle type before assuming the personal-car rule covers a work truck or trailer.
