TAMIU's Back Brush Is a Birding Stop
TPWD lists the Texas A&M International University campus, near Loop 20 in Laredo, as a day-use stop on the Laredo Loop wildlife trail. The draw isn't the buildings. It's the large tract of undeveloped brush behind the university.
On TPWD's list for the site are sparrows, Northern Bobwhite and Scaled Quail, Long-billed and Curve-billed Thrashers, Cactus Wren, and Black-throated Sparrow. A dirt road, a small pond, and the brush edge can also turn up deer, javelina, and migrant birds passing through. It says something about Webb County that the edge of a city campus is still South Texas thornscrub.
Check TPWD's Laredo Loop page before visiting for the day-use note and directions, and respect campus access, gates, and any current rules.
