You need a permit before installing a septic system in Angelina County

Out past the city limits in the Piney Woods, most homes run on a septic system rather than a sewer line, and you can't put the first shovel in the ground until you have a permit in hand. The paperwork calls it an on-site sewage facility, or OSSF. The Angelina and Neches River Authority, known locally as ANRA, runs that permit program here as TCEQ's authorized agent.

Dig first and ask later and it can cost you. Skipping the permit can bring fines, and the county can make you pull the whole system back out of the ground.

As of May 2025, a permit for a single-family home ran $435 through ANRA: $425 to ANRA plus a $10 TCEQ charge. What you can install depends on your dirt. A conventional tank-and-drain-field setup works where the soil drains well, an aerobic system does the treatment mechanically, and drip distribution handles the tight clay and tricky lots that won't take a standard field. Fees move over time, so ANRA can give you the current number.
