Red Bluff Was Working Water Before It Was Fishing Water

Red Bluff Reservoir straddles the Loving-Reeves county line on the Pecos River north of Pecos. The project was constructed in 1936 for hydroelectric power and irrigation, and TPWD lists the lake as impounded in 1937. It remains working water under the Red Bluff Water Control District.

Its fish story has moved with the water. TPWD records severe level swings and golden-alga blooms that suppressed fish populations during the 2000s. Sampling stopped for several years, then resumed in 2016 after water conditions improved and fish returned.

In TPWD's 2022 sampling, white bass appeared in good abundance. Largemouth bass were not observed, and no Palmetto bass were collected. That is a dated survey snapshot, not a promise about the next trip. The lake guide says statewide fishing rules apply and directs visitors east from the historical marker on US 285.

Red Bluff therefore carries two kinds of memory at once: a reservoir built to move power and irrigation water, and a fishery that records what river levels and algae have done since.
