Quinta Mazatlan Turns a McAllen Mansion Into an Urban Sanctuary
Quinta Mazatlan is a slice of forest and history tucked inside McAllen. The City of McAllen says the Spanish Revival mansion was built in 1935 and is one of the largest adobe structures in Texas, at around 10,000 square feet, and served as a private home for much of its life.
The city says McAllen bought the site in 1998 to save it from demolition, and Quinta Mazatlan opened in 2006 as a 'mansion with a mission.' The 20-acre Tamaulipan thornforest grounds are part of the World Birding Center network that stretches across the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
It is a striking mix for a city block: a historic adobe mansion, native thornforest, bird habitat, and hands-on environmental education all in one place. Quinta Mazatlan shows how much Valley nature can fit inside McAllen itself.
