Texas Porch
Appraisal Protest Practical

You can protest your property value in Smith County

Each spring Smith CAD mails appraisal notices, and your notice shows both the new value and your protest deadline. The deadline is May 15 or 30 days after the notice is mailed, whichever is later, but the exact date is printed on your notice. Do not miss it.

You file the protest with the Smith County Appraisal District at 245 SSE Loop 323 in Tyler, not the tax office. Ask for an informal review first, where many disputes are resolved with an appraiser. If that does not settle it, your case goes to the Smith County Appraisal Review Board, a panel of local residents. Bring comparable sales or other evidence that the value is wrong.
