Who Handles Property Tax in Hamilton County
The Hamilton Central Appraisal District sits at 401 E. Main St. in Hamilton, and it's the office that decides what your property is worth. That's where you go to file for an exemption, protest a value you think is too high, or sort out how your land got assessed. The CAD puts a number on your property; it doesn't take your money.
Now for the part that catches people. There's a Tax Assessor-Collector office a few blocks over at 102 N. Rice St., but in Hamilton County it doesn't actually collect property taxes. The county is a non-collecting unit, and that job falls back to the appraisal district too. So when your bill arrives and you've got a question about what's owed or how to pay it, you're calling the CAD on Main Street, not the office on Rice. One building does the valuing and the collecting both.
