Turning 65 or Newly Disabled? Cameron County Has Extra Tax Breaks

The regular homestead exemption is just the starting point. The Cameron Appraisal District also offers over-65, disabled-person, and 100% disabled-veteran homestead exemptions on a primary residence. Each one shaves more off the value your taxes are figured on, and the over-65 and disabled exemptions also freeze your school taxes so they can't climb while you own and live in the home.

These don't apply automatically. You file an affidavit and proof with the Cameron Appraisal District, not the tax office. A common moment to check is right after you turn 65, after a disability determination, or after moving into a home that qualifies. People often leave money on the table simply because no one told them a new exemption opened up.

Call the Cameron Appraisal District or check cameroncad.org for the current forms and what proof they want. The appraisal district approves the exemption; the Cameron County Tax Office then bills you on the lowered value.
