Flood Coverage Is Usually a Separate Policy

Most home insurance policies do not pay for flood damage. You can buy a separate flood policy even if a home is outside a high-risk zone. If a home is in a Special Flood Hazard Area and has a government-backed loan, flood insurance is required. A lender may also require it in other areas.

The NFIP serves places that take part in the program. That place may be a city or the county area outside cities. Find the city or county in FEMA's current Texas Community Status Book. Then ask the agent and lender about the exact address. A Dallas County mailing address alone does not tell you which NFIP community applies.
