A 32-room hotel helped move Moulton two miles

A post office was operating at Old Moulton by the mid-1850s. Stores, a church, wagon and blacksmith shops, and an Odd Fellows hall followed. The Moulton Male and Female Institute opened in 1874 and taught there for about two decades. This was a functioning community before the railroad arrived.

In 1887, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway established a station about two miles away and called it Topeka. The Moore brothers granted right-of-way across their land, and a townsite was laid out beside the tracks. Homes and businesses began shifting toward it.

The Moore Hotel made the new center hard to miss. Opened in 1888, it had 32 rooms and a display room where traveling salesmen could show their goods. Its dining room and parlor also served as gathering spaces, giving the station settlement more than a freight platform.

By the late 1890s, the old site was mostly abandoned and the railroad community had taken the Moulton name. The move was gradual, but the map change was plain: the people carried an old town's name to a depot, a hotel, and a new commercial center two miles away.
