McKinney Falls Puts Limestone Waterfalls Inside Austin

Onion Creek does the showy work at McKinney Falls. Water slides over broad limestone shelves at the Upper and Lower Falls, while an early Texas homestead and an old rock shelter give the park a second story beyond the swimming holes.

The park has nearly nine miles of trails, though not every trail allows bicycles. It also has 81 campsites with water and electricity and six cabins. Fishing from the bank inside the state park does not require a fishing license, but normal size and bag rules still apply.

Swimming depends on the creek. There is no lifeguard, and rain can bring high water, debris, or a closure. Day passes often sell out on busy weekends and holidays. Check the park alert before leaving home, reserve ahead when crowds are likely, and keep pets, food, glass, alcohol, and coolers out of the falls areas.
