Name story
Magnolia Went from Mink to Melton to Magnolia
Magnolia's name has a paper-trail feel to it. In early days the area was known as Mink's Prairie. By 1850, people had shortened that to Mink.
The railroad gave the community another name in 1902: Melton. It honored Jim Melton, a large county landowner. Then the U.S. Post Office kept mixing up Melton with Milton, so local people changed the name again.
They chose Magnolia for the many magnolia trees beside nearby Mill Creek. That detail helps a fast-growing place keep its older self in view. Behind the shops and newer streets is a name story made from prairie shorthand, rail paperwork, postal mix-ups, one landowner's name, and a creek lined with trees.
It also keeps the name from feeling generic. Magnolia is not only a pleasant word on signs. Here it points back to a real creekside landscape.
