Birding
The Laredo Loop Turns Webb County Into a Birding Route
From the highway, Webb County can look like dry brush and warehouses. TPWD's Laredo Loop, part of the Great Texas Wildlife Trails, draws a different map. It links stops across the county, including Texas A&M International University, Lake Casa Blanca International State Park, Zacate Creek Park, and the Laredo College / St. Peter's Historical District, plus river-edge ranch sites along the Rio Grande.
Together those stops cover a real mix of habitat: thornscrub brush, creek beds cut into bedrock, ponds, campus plantings, the reservoir, and the river floodplain. That's why a route like this turns up everything from South Texas sparrows and quail to pelicans, parakeets, and Mexican free-tailed bats, depending on where you stand.
Pull up TPWD's Laredo Loop page before you go. It lists each site with directions, day-use notes, the wildlife you might see, and access limits, including the stops where you should call ahead before showing up.
