Lanana Creek Trail Threads Town Into the Woods

A few blocks from downtown, Lanana Creek starts pulling the city into shade. TPWD's wildlife-trail page follows a 3.5-mile stretch from 805 E. Main behind Liberty Hall to Jimmy Hinds Park. Later extensions and sidewalk underpasses now carry the trail farther north, so the old TPWD distance no longer tells the whole story.

The creek gives the trail its personality. A pond beside the path holds frogs and other aquatic life. Bald cypress, sycamore, willow, arrowhead, ash, and lilies mark the wetter ground. Rich, moist soil along Lanana Creek supports dogwood, black walnut, pecan, and water oak, with large water oaks close to the banks.

Pecan Park, near the university campus, adds the everyday city-park piece: restrooms, water fountains, a playground, and a broad stand of pecan trees. In spring migration, warblers and orioles move through the canopy. A walk here can start with a downtown errand and end in creek shade. The trail helps explain why Nacogdoches can feel wooded even when you are still inside town.
