An Old Rail Bed Still Connects Weatherford and Mineral Wells

The Lake Mineral Wells Trailway follows a reclaimed railroad bed for 20 miles, from northwest Weatherford to downtown Mineral Wells. The old grade keeps the slopes gentle and the curves broad for hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders. It also connects with Lake Mineral Wells State Park.

The trail is 10 feet wide. Two miles from the Mineral Wells end are paved; the other 18 miles use finely crushed limestone. Sixteen bridges carry the route across the landscape, including a 500-foot bridge over U.S. 180.

Each of the four trailheads has paved parking, drinking water, restrooms, trail information, and accessible parking. Rain can close the trail, so check TPWD conditions before making the drive. On a dry day, the route lets you follow the old rail corridor rather than merely crossing it.
