I-37 Has a Hurricane Evacuation Lane Out of Corpus Christi

Northbound I-37 has a wide shoulder for hurricane traffic leaving Corpus Christi. In town, the lane uses the inside shoulder from SH 358, also called Padre Island Drive, to the north US 77 junction beyond the Nueces River. Farther north, it moves to the outside shoulder and runs to US 181. The shoulder becomes a travel lane when officials open it.

I-37 is one route, not the route for every driver or storm. Choose based on the storm path and where you plan to go. Listen to local officials and emergency reports. The road cannot carry all traffic leaving Corpus Christi and nearby areas, so some drivers may need another route. A second plan can reverse the southbound lanes. Local officials and the State Operations Center decide whether to use it during a large evacuation.

Before storm season, review the Corpus Christi route map and the city's evacuation-zone map. During an evacuation, take the route local officials name and check DriveTexas for road conditions. If you are older or have a disability, call 2-1-1 for help. The same number handles shelter and special-needs information.
