How to Lower Your Property Tax with a Homestead Exemption
A homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of your home. That means a smaller tax bill. To qualify, the home must be your main residence as of January 1 of the tax year. You have to apply for it; it isn't automatic.
File your application with the Camp Central Appraisal District at 143 Quitman St., Pittsburg. You will need a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID showing your home address. Texas school districts must give at least a $140,000 exemption on a homestead. Other local taxing units, like the City of Pittsburg or Northeast Texas Community College District, may offer additional optional exemptions. The general filing deadline is May 1, but check with Camp CAD to confirm the current deadline.
