Homestead Exemption Practical

How the Homestead Exemption Works in Comal County

A homestead exemption lowers taxable value. It does not lower the market value on the appraisal record. State law sets the school-tax break. Comal County also lists a 20% option for its county tax.

The home must be your principal residence. A rental or weekend house does not qualify just because you own it. Your Texas driver license or state ID generally needs to match the homestead address, with limited exceptions listed on the application.

Do not wait for the next January if you buy and move in during the year. Texas allows a qualifying new owner to receive the exemption for the eligible part of that year when the prior owner did not already receive it. File with Comal Appraisal District and use its current instructions for deadlines and documents.
