Hays County grew into a hinge between Austin and the Hill Country

The 2010 census counted 157,107 people in Hays County. The 2020 count was 241,067. A July 2025 estimate put the county at 304,390. The dates matter because an estimate is a snapshot, not a fixed label.

Most growth is easy to see along IH-35. Buda, Kyle, and San Marcos form a busy line south of Austin. West of the road, the land soon turns to hills, wells, springs, ranch roads, and small towns.

That split helps explain Hays County today. The corridor needs more city services. The Hill Country side talks more about wells, rivers, and rural growth.
