Fritch Grew When Sanford Dam Changed the Map

Fritch started with a railroad before it became a lake town. The railroad arranged a right-of-way across three ranches in 1924, and the tracks reached the future town on July 1, 1927. The depot took the name of railroad vice president H. C. "Fred" Fritch; a post office followed in 1928.

Growth came slowly. The City of Fritch says that in 1940 the town had one store, a post office, and about 75 people despite several gas companies nearby. The Sanford Dam project changed the pace. Fritch incorporated in 1959, and the Bureau of Reclamation dates the dam's construction to 1962 through 1965.

Sanford Dam backed the Canadian River into Lake Meredith, built for water supply, flood control, wildlife, and recreation. That explains Fritch's two-part identity: a railroad name on the High Plains and a lake town shaped by a federal water project.
