Fred Stone Park Sits at the End of Willacy's Birding Road

The Sacahuistale Loop runs north from Port Mansfield through broad flats and old mesquites. It ends at Fred Stone County Park. Texas Parks and Wildlife marks the park as stop LTC 014 on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. At the bay, beach shorebirds replace the brush-country birds seen along the road. Gulls and terns move over the nearshore water.

The site is listed for day use. Nearby boat launches and charters offer trips across the Laguna Madre toward Mansfield Cut, the boat channel through Padre Island. The rebuilt public fishing pier also has a local name. County leaders named it for Oscar De Luna in 2022. That December, the county reopened the park for parking and pier access.

Park features are still changing. A 2024 General Land Office report found damaged or missing features. As checked July 29, 2026, work on restrooms and sidewalks was still active. A separate shoreline design job was active too. Those records do not settle today's beach access or prove that all work is done. Plan a special trip around the county's live access notice and the GLO project status. The lasting part is the landscape: one county road ends where thorny flats, fishing water, and a coastal bird route meet.
