Kenedy's Creek Parkway Carries Its Trail Under Highway 181

Escondido Creek is modest and sometimes dry, but it carries a long piece of Karnes County water history. The creek is a tributary in the southern San Antonio River watershed. Since the 1950s, the River Authority and local partners have built, operated, and maintained 13 dams in its watershed.

Kenedy turned part of that creek corridor into Escondido Creek Parkway. Its trail runs for more than a mile and is 10 feet wide. It passes under Highway 181 while linking Joe Gully Park and sports fields with nearby homes and schools, so walkers and cyclists can stay off the highway crossing.

The amenities carry their own Karnes County mix: a playground, splash pad, skate park, pavilion, amphitheater, pump jack, windmill, and horned toad habitat. Picnic tables and grills round out the grounds. Water control, a safe crossing, oilfield hardware, local wildlife, and play space all meet along the same creek.
