Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemptions Go Through FBCAD

Texas gives disabled veterans a real break on property taxes, and how big it is depends on the VA disability rating. A partial rating knocks a set dollar amount off the taxable value; a 100 percent service-connected or unemployability rating can wipe out the property tax on a homestead entirely. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans and of service members killed in the line of duty can keep an exemption too.

You file with the appraisal district where the home sits, which in Fort Bend County means FBCAD. Its exemption materials list the 100 percent disabled-veteran exemption and exactly what to bring: the state application form, your VA award letter, and current ID.

If your rating goes up, you become a surviving spouse, or you move to a new homestead, the account won't update itself, so confirm the current form with FBCAD. And note that disabled-veteran license plates are a different filing handled by the tax office, not the same thing as this property-tax exemption.
