Two Different Tax Breaks for Disabled Veterans in Cameron County

There are two breaks here, and they're easy to mix up. A Texas-resident veteran with a disability rating gets a partial exemption the Cameron Appraisal District applies to any one property they choose, and it doesn't have to be where they live. Separately, a veteran rated 100% disabled or unemployable can take a full exemption, but only on the home they actually live in.

So the right form depends on your rating and on which property you're talking about. A veteran with a 100% rating on their own house and a veteran claiming the partial break on a rental they own are filing two different things, even though both are 'disabled-veteran exemptions.'

Both go through the Cameron Appraisal District, not the tax office. The district approves the exemption, and the savings then show up on the bill the Cameron County Tax Office sends. Have your VA disability letter ready when you file; that's the piece they need to set the amount.
