El Camino Real Crossed the River Near Eagle Pass

A 1965 marker on the Maverick County courthouse grounds preserves an older road through this stretch of the Rio Grande. El Camino Real crossed the river near Eagle Pass, long before modern bridge traffic defined the crossing.

The marker ties the road to Louis St. Denis, Spanish missionaries, Moses Austin, troops, and settlers. It also points to Spanish mission ruins and military posts in the county. Those names turn the river from a line on a map into a route people had been learning to cross for generations.

Maverick County was created in 1856, but the road story on its courthouse lawn reaches farther back. The marker keeps the county seat connected to the travelers, missions, and military routes that came before it.
