Harris County Businesses May Need to Render Equipment to HCAD

Business personal property is the taxable stuff a business uses to make money: equipment, furniture, tools, inventory, and business vehicles. Reporting it to the appraisal district is called a rendition. HCAD's guide says the rendition is required once the total market value of that property tops $125,000.

Here is the part owners often miss: if you skip the rendition, you do not skip the tax. Texas law requires HCAD to set the January 1 market value of your business property whether you file or not — and a value set without your input is rarely in your favor. Filing is your chance to put real numbers on the record.

The deadline is April 15, or the following Monday if it lands on a weekend. Most businesses use the general rendition form, and those with vehicles may also need the vehicle schedule. If you opened, closed, moved, or sold a business this year, pull HCAD's current forms rather than reusing last year's account.
