Lubbock Claims Buddy Holly — and Built a Center for It

Buddy Holly was born and raised in Lubbock, and the city has never been shy about claiming him. The City of Lubbock runs the Buddy Holly Center to preserve, collect, and promote Holly's legacy along with the wider music of Lubbock and West Texas, while also rotating contemporary visual-arts and music exhibits through its galleries.

Just outside, the Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza holds the West Texas Walk of Fame and the well-known Buddy Holly statue — the photo stop most visitors find first.

It helps explain why music feels baked into Lubbock's identity. This is the flat-plains town that produced Holly and a long line of musicians after him, and the city keeps a center and a plaza built around that record.
