Beach Driving on Follett's Island Still Requires a Street-Legal Vehicle

Follett's Island, the stretch of beach between Surfside and San Luis Pass, has an easygoing reputation — no fee or permit to park, drive, or camp on the sand. But the county is clear on one point: any vehicle driven on the beach must be street legal. A dune buggy, golf cart, or unregistered ATV does not qualify.

The same county rules ask visitors to leave glass at home, keep vehicles out of the state-protected dunes, and check whether a burn ban is in effect before lighting a campsite fire. Soft sand near the dune line traps cars easily, so good tires and a little caution save a long afternoon.

Before you roll onto Follett's Island, look up the county's beach page for current rules and conditions. A registered, street-legal vehicle is part of the beach plan, not an afterthought.
