Cross Plains, Texas

Cross Plains is a small town in Callahan County, about 40 miles southeast of Abilene in the rolling rangeland and mesquite country of west-central Texas. It is known as the longtime home of pulp-fiction writer Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan the Barbarian, whose house there is preserved as a museum.

Property here runs through the Callahan Central Appraisal District and the county tax office — the homestead exemption, the appraisal cap, protests, and any MUD, PID, or special districts all sit at the parcel level. The Callahan County notes below cover the practical details, with the official county directory for the appraisal district and tax office.
